The big news for the 2026 model year is that the HEMI V8 engine is back with a roar. Ram phased this powertrain out for 2025 trucks, but directly responded to public outcry from fans who still wanted to have it as an option. But while you can get this legendary engine under the hood again, you will have to add it as an upgrade, because it doesn’t come standard on any trim in the lineup.

The HEMI can be added to the Tradesman, Express, Warlock, Big Horn, and Laramie trims for an extra cost (this will also be true for the Rebel later on) and is a no-cost-added option for the Limited and Longhorn trims. Opting for the HEMI V8 will get you a special Symbol of Protest badge on your fender, featuring a Ram’s head powered by a V8 block.

Comparing the HEMI V8 and Hurricane I-6

While this option is great to have back for those who want it, it’s worth considering your options before you get swept away by the hype. After all, there’s a reason Ram decided to retire the engine in the first place, and that’s because the Hurricane turbo I-6 that replaced it for the 2025 model year is significantly more powerful and slightly more fuel efficient.

The HEMI V8 produces up to 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, while the Hurricane I-6 produces up to 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque. This gives you more speed for thrilling driving as well as higher towing and hauling capabilities (an extra 280 lbs of towing for a total of 11,610 lbs and an extra 180 lbs of payload for a total of 1,930 lbs).

The Hurricane I-6 is the more affordable option of the two engines: it comes standard on the Laramie and Rebel trims and is an available upgrade on all of the lower trim levels for less money than it costs to add the HEMI V8.

Entry-Level Power: The Pentastar V6

Of course, not everyone has the means to upgrade above the base powertrain. Luckily, you won’t get stuck with an I-4 like you would with certain other trucks. Entry-level trims of the 2026 Ram 1500 come with a Pentastar V6 capable of producing 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, giving you the ability to tow up to 8,130 lbs or haul up to 2,360 lbs of payload in a properly-equipped truck. That’s the highest payload figure in the lineup, so workers who need to fill the bed up for jobs around Burlington will want to keep that in mind.

High-Output Hurricane I-6

Finally, a High-Output (HO) version of the Hurricane I-6 sits at the top of the lineup, exclusive to the Limited, Longhorn, RHO, and Tungsten trims, on which it comes standard. With up to 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque, this engine delivers the best performance, whether on- or off-road. However, because it’s built with fun in mind, it does have less towing power than the standard Hurricane I-6.
