The 2024 Ram 1500 provides truck shoppers with one last big outing for the light-duty pickup featuring the famed HEMI V8 powertrain before the mid-generation refresh. It doesn't attempt to reinvent the light-duty segment, but it does offer shoppers some unique new additions for the model year to improve what the Ram 1500 already does so well. The trim lineup has been slightly altered, and those looking to get their hands on the TRX before it's retired will be happy to know that it's still available for one final time in this fifth generation.
There is also the Ram 1500 TRX Final Edition, a performance-oriented variant of that popular off-road trim; this version comes standard with a mighty supercharged engine and brings three new exterior color options for this trim's final year out: Delmonico Red, Night Edge Blue, and Harvest Sunrise. Alongside the Rebel, the 2024 Ram 1500 has excellent off-road trim offerings, making it competitive against other light-duty rivals such as the Chevy Silverado 1500 and Ford F-150. You can get the Ram 1500 in multiple bed, cab, trim, and powertrain configurations suited to your driving preferences; in total, there are eight trims available, starting with the Tradesman, the Tradesman HFE, the Big Horn, the Laramie, the Rebel, the Limited Longhorn, the Limited, and the TRX.

The half-ton Ram 1500 has two main powertrain options for the majority of the trim selection, and it has a dedicated supercharged powertrain exclusively for the TRX. The base powertrain is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with mild hybrid capabilities thanks to eTorque, a boost from an electric generator that gives the Ram 1500 extra lower-end torque off the line. Overall, the Pentastar V6 produces 305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque.
The upgraded engine option is the 5.7-liter HEMI Eagle V8, which also comes in a mild-hybrid form thanks to eTorque, granting you an overall 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The third powertrain option is the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V8, which is strictly available on the top-tier TRX trim; this mighty V8 produces 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. All three engines come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission; the first two can be configured in either rear- or four-wheel drive, while the TRX is available only in four-wheel drive.
All of the trims come equipped with power steering and four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes. There are a lot of other modern components that improve the Ram 1500's on-road performance, bolstering the optimized aerodynamic design of the exterior, which helps to reduce drag, achieving a .357 drag coefficient. The Ram 1500 also has an active air dam, which is a neat feature that sees the front air dam (the wind guard below the front bumper) automatically lower by about 2.5 inches as you approach 30 mph; this further helps reduce drag and leans into the truck's aerodynamic design, which not only helps with stability but with fuel economy since the truck is doing less work to achieve optimal performance.
Other stability enhancements come in the form of the available air suspension system, the Active-Level Four Corner Air Suspension; this can raise or lower the truck to not only load-level the frame but also balance out to stabilize at highway speeds. It's also useful for keeping the truck level when the bed is stacked with payloadāand, like the other performance features, it helps improve fuel economy and traveling at speed. With the inclusion of the Selec-Speed Control dial, you can easily choose how the truck performs under certain terrain or utility conditions, being able to select from 4WD High, 4WD Low, and 2WD settings for Ram 1500s configured in four-wheel drive; with these, your torque and brakes will coordinate at a lower speed to keep your Ram 1500 stabilized on the downward slopes so you can focus on steering.
Thanks to the 98% high-strength steel chassis that the Ram 1500 rides on, it's capable of impressive feats of towing and hauling. You have two different bed configurations: either a five-foot, six-inch bed that offers 53.9 cu.ft. of cargo volume or a six-foot, four-inch bed that provides 61.5 cu.ft. of cargo volume. With the Pentastar V6, you can tow or trailer 7,730 lbs of cargo when properly equipped; you can also carry a payload of 2,300 lbs, making this a great engine for those who need a reliable half-ton work truck.
The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 manages an impressive towing capacity of 12,750 lbs, which gives you a lot of flexibility to attach everything from trailers and campers to boats and cargo carriers. You also have a max payload of 1,940 lbs, so the HEMI V8 is still a viable option for those who expect to cart large loads but want better power. Even the Hellcat V8 still makes for a viable utilitarian, thanks to its max trailering rating of 8,220 lbs and payload capacity of 1,350 lbs.
Additionally, you can get more utility out of the light-duty Ram 1500 with available features like the Multi-Function tailgate, which adds the ability to swing the tailgate out from the side, in addition to having a dampened lowering ability just like a normal tailgate. The Multi-Function tailgate can open with a 60/40 split at up to 88 degrees when opened sideways. When paired with packages like the HEMI Max Tow Package, trims like the base Tradesman get a 256-mm rear axle with a 3.92:1 rear axle ratio for improved torque distribution, as well as an integrated trailer brake controller. With the off-road trims, you have improved suspension and shocks with a raised ride height and larger all-terrain tires; the Rebel trim is more for intermediate off-roading, while the TRX grants advanced off-roading capabilities.
Safety, comfort, and infotainment come together to make the 2024 Ram 1500 a convenient and feature-rich full-size pickup truck with lots of storage areas. Its cab is available in either a Quad Cab format with two full doors and two half doors or a Crew Cab format with four full-sized doors; both iterations of the cab can seat up to five people across two rows. On the luxury trims, you have access to a dual-pane panoramic sunroof that gets about ten square feet of visibility to the outside.
The cloth seats are available with Nappa leather upholstery and accent stitching for the upper-end trims. Also available are power, heated, and ventilated front seats with power windows and locks. Remote start with keyless entry is optional on select trims, making for easy accessibility. There is plenty of interior storage, including upper and lower secure glove compartments, center console storage, floor storage, and in-floor removable bins; this gives you a lot of different ways to conveniently store items throughout the cabin.
One of the new features for the 2024 model year is the tailgate ajar warning lamp made standard across the trim lineup; this complements a standard suite of safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, pedestrian detection, and tire pressure monitoring, among more than a dozen other standard and available features. You also have trailering apps, multiple camera views, and smart navigation support with Bluetooth and voice activation.
The dashboard has a 12-inch digital driver display and a 5-, 8-, or 12-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot support is integrated into this tech ecosystem, and even more convenient features include an HD rearview camera, available head-up display, and SiriusXM Satellite Radio, which you can enjoy with the available 900-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon premium surround sound audio system, making the 2024 Ram 1500 the ultimate media cabin experience for truckers on the go!
