The All-New 2026 Cherokee: An Iconic SUV Returns

From the ashes, one of the most famous Jeep vehicles has risen! For 50 years, the Cherokee combined Jeep’s off-road capability with everyday performance and style before being discontinued in 2023. But after a two-year hiatus, the Cherokee is back, with a revamped design that maintains the classic Cherokee aesthetic. Value-focused outdoor enthusiasts can once again find a Jeep Cherokee for sale to power their urban adventures or head for the wondrous wilderness.
Needless to say, a lot has changed for this compact SUV during its time in hibernation. With a redesigned powertrain, chassis, infotainment, and even new trim levels, it feels almost like a different vehicle—except when it takes on trails and city streets with equal deftness. So what’s new on the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, and why should it be your next vehicle? Here’s an up-close look at the Cherokee’s triumphant return.
A New Hybrid Powertrain with Power and Efficiency
The updates begin under the hood, as this Jeep has a powertrain for the modern age. Whereas previous Cherokee models could be optioned with a choice of gas-only engines, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee only has one power plant — but it’s a doozy. The Cherokee has gone hybrid with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with dual electric motors, with power delivered through an electronically controlled CVT.
Together, they produce 210 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque, which are solid all-around performance figures. One of the key benefits of the new powertrain is improved fuel efficiency, helping the 2026 Cherokee deliver more miles between fill-ups than previous gas-only models with an EPA-estimated 37 MPG combined. This compact SUV can travel more than 500 miles on a tank of fuel, so your adventures last longer.
Having a single powertrain also means greater consistency in the Cherokee’s performance and capabilities. All trims are AWD, and while previous towing specs varied wildly, each 2026 Cherokee can tow up to 3,500 lbs of your equipment and gear.
A Refined Yet Versatile Driving Experience
While Jeep and its followers are known for going where others shy away, the automaker recognizes that many drivers primarily use their SUVs on the main road and deserve a solid ride quality for daily commutes. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee strikes a balance, improving on-road comfort while still impressing off the pavement.
As part of the overhauled design, Jeep built the 2026 Cherokee on the same platform as the Dodge Charger. That means it has a healthy dose of the Charger’s sporty yet comfortable driving dynamics, with coilover front struts, a multi-link rear suspension, and large disc brakes. Compared to the previous Cherokee, the standard wheel size increases from 17 to 18 inches for better handling, and you can upgrade to 20-inch rims.
Yet the Jeep Cherokee hasn’t forgotten where it came from. The Active Drive I 4×4 System adapts to any terrain, and the dual anti-roll bars keep your SUV stable. Trailer sway control, hill descent control, and Selec-Terrain drive modes offer even more ways to get where you want and need to go.
A Revamped Trim Lineup
Which grade of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee is right for you? By the time the original Jeep Cherokee concluded its run, it had shrunk from offering as many as nine trim levels to just two, going from too many choices to not enough. The 2026 relaunch hits the sweet spot with four trim levels, letting you go budget-friendly, enjoy all the bells and whistles, or something in between.
- Base: The entry-level model still offers plenty of frills with all-LED exterior lighting, heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, driver lumbar support, a leatherette steering wheel, black bumpers and mirrors, and the iconic seven-slot grille.
- Laredo: Step up your sophistication and capability by adding fog lights, remote start, a power driver’s seat, premium cloth upholstery, and heated front seats.
- Limited: Luxury takes center stage as this Cherokee model gains perforated leatherette seat trim, multi-function side mirrors, a power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, power passenger lumbar adjustments, and an available factory trailer receiver hitch.
- Overland: This Jeep will take you anywhere in style with performance tires, an optional black roof, proximity lamps, a power passenger seat, memory settings, a hands-free liftgate, and a dual-pane sunroof. Option packages add ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and auto-dimming mirrors.
Increased Interior Space
Plenty of automakers say that their vehicles are bigger and better than ever. In the case of the 2026 Jeep Cherokee, it’s literally bigger and better. It measures five inches longer, 1.5 inches wider, and 1.3 inches taller than the last edition, transforming the Cherokee from a compact to a super-compact SUV.
Nearly all the added width and height go toward cabin space, letting passengers spread out with more room for their heads, shoulders, and torsos. As for the length, Jeep decided to emphasize cargo capacity. Maximum storage jumps from 54.7 to 68.3 cu.ft, a 25% increase that makes a world of difference in what you can bring on a journey. Even if you leave the second-row seats in, there’s 33.6 cu.ft. of space for your suitcases, camping gear, music equipment, and more.
That’s not to say passengers’ legs will be cramped. Front legroom increases slightly from 41.1 to 41.3 inches, and rear legroom is more than adequate at 38.5 inches. The 2026 Cherokee is again about balance, letting you pack and go without sacrificing comfort.
Bigger, More Immersive Technology and Connectivity
Jeep also uses the bigger interior to beef up the 2026 Jeep Cherokee’s technology, taking it from one of the pack to a frontrunner. Each Cherokee now has a large, easy-to-use 12.3-inch touchscreen, dwarfing the previous 8.4-inch screen. The infotainment system is loaded with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L, a Wi-Fi hotspot, integrated voice commands, a 10.3-inch digital gauge display, and up to four USB charging ports.
The Cherokee Limited adds a wireless charging pad, and the Overland has built-in navigation with connected traffic services, HD Radio, Amazon Alexa, and a household power outlet. Enjoy the standard six-speaker sound system or choose a high-fidelity Alpine system with nine speakers and a subwoofer.
Jeep has also substantially upgraded the driver assistance system. The basic suite includes forward collision mitigation, adaptive cruise control, active lane management, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alerts, and driver attention alerts. By switching to higher trim levels or buying option packages, you can add a 360-degree camera system, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot trailer detection, front parking assistance, and side distance warnings.
