There isn’t a rule that says Jeep drivers are required to be adventurous. In fact, one of the most beautiful attributes of a Jeep is that it truly can be driven almost anywhere, including up and down the same streets as part of the same daily commute. Then again, you could get behind the wheel of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee and take advantage of the wild variety of terrain available on this planet to have a mud-soaked, rock-climbing, water-fording adventure like no one has ever had before. What truly makes an SUV like the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee so special is that it handles every task set before it with gusto.
Even more exciting is the fact that the Grand Cherokee has been completely redesigned for 2022. Jeep has made many changes to its classic SUV, including adding a three-row model known as the Grand Cherokee L and a hybrid version––the Grand Cherokee 4xe––to the lineup. Jeep has an uncanny way of knowing exactly how to let drivers choose their own adventure, which makes the 2022 Grand Cherokee an SUV that drivers across the country are excited to check out for themselves.
Whether you’re an experienced off-roader or strictly interested in the paved highways and byways of life, you know that you can’t get anywhere without adequate power and performance. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee comes with a choice of engines that, while not brand new, are tried and true powerhouses that Jeep aficionados continue to appreciate.
The first is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine. Providing 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, this classic has the ability to tow up to 6,200 pounds in a properly-equipped Grand Cherokee. No matter whether you choose the standard rear-wheel drive or the optional 4x4, this engine offers up to 19 miles per gallon on the city streets and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.
An optional 5.7L Hemi V8 engine can be optioned in for those drivers who agree that more is more. With 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, this engine is here to get things done, including towing loads up to 7,200 pounds. Offered in 4x4 models only, this engine is designed with fuel-saving technology that automatically senses when full power is not needed and deactivates four cylinders. As a result, drivers can anticipate up to 14 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway––impressive figures for an engine of this size.
Finally, there is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Plug-In Hybrid. This powertrain combines a turbocharged 2.0L engine with electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack to produce some incredible performance. Not only does this version offer an all-electric range of 26 miles before the gasoline engine is needed, but it provides a massive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Whether you’re taking the family on the adventure of a lifetime or heading out for some much-needed solace alone, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is just as prepared to make the trek with you as any other Grand Cherokee model.
Just as there is not just one way to drive a Jeep, there is not just one Jeep to be driven. Instead, the manufacturer offers Grand Cherokee models ranging from just the necessities to show-stopping elegance. Both the standard two-row, five-passenger Grand Cherokee and the three-row, seven-passenger Grand Cherokee L are offered in Laredo, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trims. The Trail Rated Trailhawk trim is available only in the two-row configuration.
The Laredo starts things off the right way with Jeep’s Uconnect 5 infotainment system, which features an 8.4-inch touchscreen, 4G LTE Wifi, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Moving up the trims unlocks a 10.1-inch display, as well as a 19-speaker premium sound system. An available Passenger Screen allows the front seat passenger to use the infotainment system as well, giving them full co-pilot access to navigation and settings or allowing them to zone out with Amazon Fire TV and wireless headphone connectivity.
Standard safety and driver assistance features across the lineup include Jeep’s Active Lane Management technology, Full-speed Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection, a Parkview backup camera, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-path detection. Higher trims include additional driver assistance offerings, including Drowsy Driver Detection, Active Driving Assist, a surround-view camera system, and traffic sign recognition.
Drivers may also choose to add the 10-inch digital Head-Up Display and Digital Rearview Mirror camera, both of which help you maintain awareness of your surroundings, regardless of how rambunctious the passengers might get. With available leather upholstery, heated and ventilated second-row seats, and selectable massage settings, the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee lineup is designed to make every driver and passenger feel completely at home, wherever the road ahead may lead.
Any 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be had with Jeep’s famous 4x4 capability, but there’s only one trim that has earned full Trail Rated honors: the Trailhawk. This trim is offered exclusively with 4x4 and is designed to provide greater control and capability when the pavement ends. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is designed with 11.3 inches of ground clearance and the ability to ford through water up to 24 inches deep. With Jeep’s available Quadra-Lift suspension, the Grand Cherokee can drop lower to be more aerodynamic at high speeds and raise itself to clear more challenging obstacles on the trail.
The available Selec-Terrain Traction Management System offers drivers pre-programmed settings to help them adjust the torque and steering feel depending on the situation, including Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand options for when the going gets rough.
But not every fascinating feature is mechanical. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been blessed with a full array of technology to make driving easier on and off the pavement. For example, available advanced navigation features help drivers figure out where to go next, with a large configurable display that shows everything between “here” and “there.” A night vision camera uses thermal sensors to scan the road ahead for signs of life, allowing drivers to react faster to sudden movement in the dark.
And then, of course, there’s the ample cargo room. Some of the best adventures require you to pack some “stuff.” Whether that’s an overnight bag and a cooler or a kayak and paddles, the Grand Cherokee is equipped to handle all of your stuff. With the second and third rows folded, the Grand Cherokee L offers up to 84.6 cubic feet of cargo space. While the two-row version is smaller, as you’d expect, drivers can still look forward to having 70.8 cubic feet of space with the rear seat folded.
Over the years, drivers have come to associate the Jeep brand name with the wild and rugged world of off-roading and adventure. And while your daily driving needs may be much more sedate and asphalt-oriented, that doesn’t mean the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t exactly what you ought to be driving. With models ranging from a well-equipped standard two-wheel drive to a 4x4 model that could also serve as an executive suite, it’s clear that the modern Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t made for just one type of driver. In fact, the Jeep Grand Cherokee doesn’t just have to stay on one type of road––it’s made to explore this world with you every mile of the way.
