After last yearā€™s success of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, it is no surprise that Jeep is looking to expand its offerings of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) across its lineup. The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is the next expression of this bold design, and it builds on what we saw last year with new options and fantastic features. If you are looking for a full-size plug-in hybrid SUV, then the Grand Cherokee 4xe is exactly what you have been waiting for. It delivers an amazing combination of drivetrain flexibility, remarkable fuel efficiency, and robust performance that makes it perfect for a wide range of drivers.

Much of the attention for the Grand Cherokee 4xe has been focused on its drivetrain, which makes sense since it is what really sets it apart from many other options. This model features the same engine as the Wrangler 4xe: a 2.0L I-4 engine that delivers 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers get boosted up to 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque when combined with the pair of motors it is equipped with. Altogether, this makes the 4xe the most powerful Grand Cherokee option, even more so than models that come with the impressive 5.7L HEMI V8 engine.

All of this power is not just for looks either; the Grand Cherokee 4xe can handle up to 6,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity when properly equipped. The available Trailhawk trim also makes this one of the most capable full-size hybrid SUVs on the road, thanks to a class-exclusive sway bar disconnect for rough terrain and Jeepā€™s Quadra-Drive II 4x4 system. Despite its robust capabilities and power, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is also a luxurious and advanced piece of machinery with impressive tech systems that include a 10.1-inch infotainment display, available front-passenger display, and much more. Combine all of this with more than 70 cu.ft. of interior cargo volume available, and you have a full-size SUV designed to meet all of your needs.

    A Standout Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

For many people, the standout feature of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is going to be its powertrain, and for good reason. The Grand Cherokee has been one of the most popular full-size SUVs on the road for many years now, with plenty of great options for engines. What really sets the 4xe model apart, however, is that this is the first-ever plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee that has been available. It comes after the introduction of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe last year and is the next step in Jeepā€™s growing lineup of PHEV options for you to choose from.

Rather than try to reinvent what already works, the Grand Cherokee 4xe utilizes the same plug-in hybrid engine that you can find on the Wrangler 4xe model. This is a 2.0L I-4 turbocharged engine that delivers 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque all on its own, which comes paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Since this is a hybrid, however, the power of the engine is just the beginning; it also comes with a belt-driven 44 hp motor along with another 134 hp electric motor to boost overall power. When combined, this allows the powertrain on the Grand Cherokee 4xe to deliver 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

By comparison, the standard Grand Cherokee with its available 5.7L HEMI V8 engine delivers 357 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, which is why Jeep is calling the 4xe their most capable Grand Cherokee on the road. Since this is a plug-in hybrid model, fuel efficiency for the Grand Cherokee 4xe is also exceptional. When you use the Hybrid Mode, this model can go up to 470 miles with a full tank of gas and charged battery, plus get an estimated 56 MPGe for fuel economy that leaves other full-size SUVs behind. Best of all, when properly equipped, the Grand Cherokee 4xe can still handle up to 6,000 lbs of towing capacity, giving you fantastic efficiency, bold performance, and robust capability.

  • Off-Road

Electric Elements Won't Stop You From Hitting the Trail

A full-size PHEV SUV is an appealing concept but not necessarily unique these days. One of the things that really sets the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe apart from its competition, however, is just how well it can take you anywhere you want to go. The off-road performance and capabilities of this SUV are exceptional even among conventional models, let alone other plug-in hybrid vehicles. There are numerous trims available for the Grand Cherokee 4xe; however, if you want exceptional performance on the trail, then we suggest taking a look at the Trailhawk.

The Trailhawk trim has become well known for delivering some of the best performance and off-road capabilities across the Jeep lineup, and this one is no exception. For starters, the Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk comes with Jeepā€™s Quadra-Drive II 4x4 system with a rear electronic limited slip differential. It features a two-speed low transfer case with numerous sensors that can determine tire slip as soon as possible and make adjustments to correct for it immediately. Up to 100% of available torque is instantly sent to the axle with the most traction when a tire slip is detected, keeping you in control even in the roughest conditions.

You also get a class-exclusive sway bar disconnect system with the Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk for superior off-road performance. This system automatically disengages the front sway bar when you are driving at low speeds, which provides the front wheels with improved articulation and movement. The amount of control and flexibility this provides for extreme off-road conditions and rock crawling really cannot be overstated, and it can allow you to traverse trails that would cause other vehicles to call it quits. Combine all of this with exclusive aesthetic touches like special blue accents for hood decals and tow hooks, and you have an off-road machine that can also cruise up to 25 miles in all-electric mode.

  • Interior

Plenty of Space and Grand Features

While the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe gets a lot of attention for its impressive PHEV design and remarkable capability, the interior delivers luxury and advanced technology that truly take it to the next level. Standard features include dual-zone front air conditioning, remote keyless entry and engine start, and heated front and rear seats with a heated steering wheel. You also get a 9-speaker sound system standard on the starting trim, along with Capri leather-trimmed seating, a dual-pane sunroof, and a 10.1-inch infotainment display, all standard. No matter what you might be looking for in your next full-size SUV, this Grand Cherokee delivers a comfortable and impressive driving experience.

Of course, if you choose a higher trim, then you can get even more robust and exciting features packed inside. With the Summit trim, for example, you get 16-way power-adjustable front seats with memory settings and built-in massager functionality. Going up to the Summit Reserve 4xe trim, however, gives you quilted Palermo leather seating that is gorgeously comfortable, along with a front-passenger screen that can be used for navigation and entertainment, plus a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system with a 10-inch subwoofer for an unbelievable audio experience on the road.

It is worth mentioning that the Grand Cherokee 4xe is only available as a two-row model with seating for up to five passengers, not as a three-row option like you can find with some other Grand Cherokee models. While that might be a drawback for some people, we see it as a great choice that ensures a luxurious interior and a comfortable ride for everyone. You get plenty of room inside the Grand Cherokee 4xe with 145 cu.ft. of total passenger volume, plus 37.7 cu.ft. of cargo space in the rear. If you really need to load up with a lot of stuff, then you can get 70.8 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside behind the front seats.
