Once kings of the road, the great American muscle car fell out of favor in the mid-1970s as rising gas prices made many drivers opt for more fuel-efficient vehicles. However, even though they were gone, they were never forgotten. Fast forward a few decades, and we saw great brands like Dodge bringing back the muscle cars we loved from our youth. In 2006, Dodge made auto buffs take notice with the announcement that it was bringing back the Challenger, one of the most iconic models of the muscle car era. Today, the 2022 Dodge Challenger represents the combination of those classic muscle cars of the past with the technological advances of today's automotive industry.
Not only is the 2022 Dodge Challenger fast, but it is also safe and connected. This is because Dodge has seen fit to equip the Challenger with the latest technology in a two-door coupe that comfortably seats up to five passengers. The 2022 Dodge Challenger also provides something that the original models lacked: solid fuel economy. In other words, you can get all the benefits of a modern vehicle while enjoying the classic lines and performance of a muscle car, all in the 2022 Dodge Challenger. This is something that few other automakers can provide.

The 2022 Dodge Challenger comes in 11 different trims. Some of these are variations on a common model. For example, there are three Widebody trims, which increase the width of the Challenger from 75.7 inches to 78.3 inches, growing the front and rear track as well. Other models feature different powertrains, with a total of five engines and two transmissions, as well as rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
The base model of the 2022 Challenger is the SXT. This model has a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. It is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and rides on a set of 18-inch aluminum wheels. The GT is also available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and features the same engine as the SXT. However, it adds a performance suspension, 20-inch satin carbon aluminum wheels, a performance hood with a hood scoop, an SRT front splitter, and several interior upgrades as well.
These interior features include a leather-wrapped performance steering wheel with a set of paddle shifters, allowing you to shift gears manually with the 8-speed automatic transmission. The houndstooth cloth seats on the Challenger GT have performance bolsters to keep you and your front seat passenger more comfortable when cornering. The 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T has the same basic features as the GT model but with a larger 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engine and an electronically controlled active exhaust. This model is available with rear-wheel drive only.
There are two models of the R/T Scat Pack, one of which is the Scat Pack Widebody. Both versions come equipped with a 6.4-liter HEMI 392 V8 engine, and they feature Brembo performance brakes. The R/T Scat Pack has heated cloth performance front seats, while the R/T Scat Pack Widebody adds a Bilstein adaptive damping suspension system.
For those who don't know, SRT stands for "Street and Racing Technology," and this is Dodge's top group that brings the performance from the racetrack to your driveway. Dodge offers four different models of the 2022 Challenger SRT Hellcat. The SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Redeye have standard bodies, but Widebody versions of both are available. The SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Widebody feature a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI SRT V8 engine, while the SRT Hellcat Redeye and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody offer a High Output version of the same engine. The Hellcat models provide SRT Brembo Performance brakes with an SRT Power Chiller and Race Cooldown mode. This will help keep the powerful engine on these models in top working order.
The aptly named 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Jailbreak features the same engine as the SRT Hellcat Redeye. However, this model increases the power output, mostly by featuring the most powerful production supercharger on the market. In addition, the Jailbreak offers numerous customization options to really make the car yours.
The top model is the 2022 Challenger SRT Super Stock. This is the only factory muscle car that rides on a set of standard drag radials. With its 6.2-liter HEMI High-Output SRT V8 engine and those 18-inch Nitto drag radial tires, you'll be surprised that the Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock is actually street legal.
Dodge doesn't hold back on the engine options for the 2022 Challenger. This allows you to choose between models with better fuel economy or faster acceleration. As a result, you will get the kind of performance you desire, whether you plan to use your Challenger for your daily commute or for weekends burning up the track.
The entry-level engine on the 2022 Dodge Challenger is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. This comes standard on the SXT and GT models, producing 303 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. The Challenger R/T adds an extra pair of cylinders and is powered by a 5.7-liter HEMI V8. It can deliver 375 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The R/T Scat Pack and R/T Scat Pack Widebody models go even bigger with a 6.4-liter HEMI 392 V8. This will give you 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. That is the most horsepower in the Challenger Scat Pack's class.
The SRT models feature more powerful engines than the other models due to their pedigree as part of Dodge Street and Racing Technology. These are built around the HEMI Hellcat V8 gas engine. The SRT Hellcat and SRT Hellcat Widebody come equipped with a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI SRT V8, capable of 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. The SRT Hellcat Redeye and SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody kick things up a notch with a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI High-Output SRT V8, providing an insane 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque.
However, the most powerful engine is featured on the Jailbreak and SRT Super Stock models. These come equipped with a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI High-Output SRT V8 with 807 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque. That is the most powerful supercharger featured on any vehicle that isn't limited to the racetrack.
On most models of the 2022 Challenger, Dodge has chosen to give drivers a choice of a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission or a TREMEC 6-speed manual transmission. The only exceptions are the SXT and GT models with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and the SRT Hellcat Redeye, Super Stock, and SRT Jailbreak models with the 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI Hellcat High-Output SRT V8. These two engines are only available with the 8-speed automatic transmission.
If you have a need for speed, then you should consider the SRT versions of the 2022 Dodge Challenger. The Challenger R/T Scat Pack models with their 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engines are quite powerful, able to take you from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 176 mph. While these are the kind of numbers that could put your driver's license in jeopardy, they actually pale in comparison to the numbers provided by the 2022 Challenger SRT models.
For example, the SRT Hellcat has a top speed of 199 mph, while the SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Still, the fastest models are the top trims. The SRT Jailbreak can also go 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, but it can top 203 mph if you push it to the redline. Meanwhile, the quickest model is the Super Stock with its drag radial tires. This will get you from 0 to 60 in just 3.25 seconds and demolish the quarter-mile in a truly breathtaking 10.5 seconds at 131 mph.
While you wouldn't think a muscle car like the 2022 Dodge Challenger could provide you with solid fuel economy, you would actually be mistaken. The Challenger features very efficient engines, especially the more affordable models, which would work surprisingly well as commuter cars. For example, the SXT and GT with rear-wheel drive and the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 give you an amazing 19 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 23 MPG combined. Choosing all-wheel drive will reduce this slightly to 18 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined.
Dodge built its reputation on muscle cars like the Challenger and Charger. However, while those original models had plenty of speed, they weren't noted for providing drivers with advanced safety features. That is certainly not the case with the 2022 Dodge Challenger, which comes equipped with Dodge's Road Guardian suite of standard and available driver assistance features.
All 2022 Dodge Challenger models feature a ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera. This will help you see what is behind you when you are pulling your Challenger out of a parking space. If you opt for the Challenger GT, you will get the ParkSense Rear Park Assist system, which will be like an extra set of eyes when backing up.
There are a number of other great safety features available on the 2022 Dodge Challenger. Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning will detect if a frontend collision is imminent. It will then sound an alert, giving you time to take evasive action. The Blind Spot Monitoring System with Rear Cross Path Detection works in two ways. First, if you go to change lanes in your Challenger, the system will let you know the path is clear before you make your move so you can avoid a crash. Second, it will let you know if a pedestrian or another vehicle is about to cross behind your Challenger when you are backing out of a parking space. In this way, driving your Challenger will be safer than ever for you and your passengers.
Back in the 1970s, the "infotainment system" on a Dodge Challenger consisted of a static-filled AM/FM radio with tinny speakers. If you were lucky, you also got an 8-track player, but you'd have to wait a while for your favorite song to come back on again while the tape ran through. Fortunately, those days are long gone, and every 2022 Dodge Challenger features a Uconnect 4 or Uconnect 4C system with a color touchscreen.
The Uconnect system seamlessly connects key performance features on your Dodge Challenger with entertainment options and smartphone connectivity. Your Uconnect system allows you to easily stream music and apps from your smartphone using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, depending on your smartphone's operating system. You can also make hands-free calls via Bluetooth connectivity.
The Challenger SXT, GT, and R/T models all feature the Uconnect 4 system with a standard 7-inch touchscreen. If you opt for a Challenger R/T Scat Pack, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Redeye, SRT Jailbreak, or Super Stock model, you will get the Uconnect 4C system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen standard. This unit also features SRT Performance Pages, so you can better check your Challenger's performance.
