Don’t look now, but Jeep has just launched its first-ever hybrid-powered Wrangler, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. In fact, it’s the first hybrid Jeep ever. Why is this big news? Jeep’s take on electric and hybrid technology is slanted toward off-roading prowess, meaning the company’s actions are all within the framework of continuing to manufacture some of the most trail-ready SUVs on the road (or off it!) today. It’s news that should excite Jeep fans everywhere!
It’s not commonly accepted to think about an energy-saving powertrain making waves for its capabilities, but with the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, that’s exactly the statement Jeep hopes to make. From unparalleled performance ability to fantastic fuel economy and no disruption of off-roading capability, this Wrangler gets you up the mountain, across the river, and through the desert just as capable as its all-gas-powered siblings. That’s great news for buyers looking to experience alternative fuel vehicles but who are not willing to compromise the benefits of a good old gas engine. What’s even more appealing is this new Wrangler 4xe delivers even better performance and capability, so the addition of hybrid technology not only meets gas-powered metrics but, in some cases, actually exceeds them.
Starting at an MSRP of just $47,995, pretty reasonable for a hybrid, this all-new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe offers up an impressive 49 MPGe of fuel economy and a driving range of up to 370 miles, which translates into more time on the road and less time refueling or recharging. Switch from all-electric to hybrid with ease to adapt to different driving conditions and even experience off-roading without engine noise. It’s truly a revolution in Jeep’s lineup, one that buyers will want to experience.
Reimagining an icon isn’t an easy proposition: it means tinkering with a gold standard, a vehicle that has earned its spot at the top of the list for 4x4 grit and off-road capability. Sometimes the gamble pays off, and sometimes it doesn’t. With the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, we think Jeep has hit it out of the park. Any Jeep fan will tell you that performance starts and stops with torque. Torque is the low range of power available for crawling and climbing, as well as towing boats and trailers. It gets the vehicle moving from a full stop without struggling, and it allows for a grab-and-hold climbing capability that defies gravity and fights stalling and struggling over difficult or steep terrain.
The Wrangler 4xe is equipped with a hybrid powertrain that includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and two electric motors. The system works together to deliver near-instant torque, responsive acceleration, and - best of all - lots of torque. Choose electric mode and enjoy zero-emission driving up to highway speeds with an all-electric total range of 21 miles. On eSave mode, the engine takes control, saving battery and using only the amount of energy needed to perform the task at hand - highway driving, city driving, or off-roading. The system maximizes efficiency and has the ability to optimize battery charge as well.
Regenerative Braking takes center stage on the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and works by using the energy created when decelerating braking to charge the battery. Switch to Max Regeneration, and the brake pedal is easily manipulated for full stops, but not necessary to decelerate, a system designed to maximize efficiency.
The Wrangler 4xe’s battery can be fully recharged in just 2 hours using a 240-volt charger or 12 hours using a more traditional household 120-volt charger. Jeep has partnered with Amazon to provide an easy purchase and installation process so you can easily outfit your garage with a 240-volt charger. Getting the electric part of your hybrid Wrangler 4xe charged up is simple.
Driving a Jeep on the road is fun enough, but wait until you head into the mountains or venture off on a dirt trail. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is Trail Rated, a badge bestowed upon it by Jeep after putting it through a rigorous series of off-roading trails. Trail Rated Jeeps are the most rugged Jeeps of all, and this Wrangler 4xe is among them.
It all starts with a capable 4x4 system that provides enough traction to keep the vehicle in contact with uneven, slippery, or mountainous terrain. The Wrangler 4xe’s Rock-Trac 4x4 System comes in a choice of Full-Time 4x4 or Part-Time 4x4, and it delivers more torque than ever found before in a Wrangler. Trail Rated Jeeps are also capable of water fording without stalling, thanks to their high air intake and thoroughly sealed electronic components. They’re also rated for maximum maneuverability, which is important when traversing rocky, uneven terrain. Articulation - or the ability to keep wheels in contact with the ground even over steep angles - is another attribute of a Trail Rated Jeep, as is substantial ground clearance and good skid plates that protect the undercarriage from damage.
The Wrangler High Altitude 4xe, the highest trim available, starts at $53,815 and comes with standard 20-inch wheels, while the mid-range Rubicon, which starts at $51,940, will get you 33-inch all-terrain tires and an impressive 10.9-inch ground clearance. The Rubicon shines in off-roading conditions, with a 4:1 low-gear ratio, which means tons of low-range torque for highly capable off-roading. No matter which trim you get, you'll have the same 2.0L 1-4 PHEV engine with a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery that generates 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe shares the same driver-assist safety technology as the rest of the Wrangler lineup. Add the Advanced Safety Group to any 4xe trim, and the list of safety features increases to include Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, which relies on sensors to identify the vehicle ahead and will automatically adjust speed to maintain a safe distance. The stop feature is capable of bringing the vehicle to a complete stop in traffic when necessary.
Advanced Brake Assist is another automatic braking system, which works by applying maximum braking power when it detects emergency situations, like an imminent crash. Auto High-Beam Headlamps are a driver’s best friend at night because they’ll automatically switch between low and high-beam settings in response to oncoming cars. The Advanced Safety Group also includes Full-Speed Forward Collision-Warning plus, a system that can sense a potential forward collision and will audibly alert the driver to apply the brakes. If it senses the driver has not responded, the system can apply the brakes up to a complete stop in order to mitigate or avoid a collision.
In addition to advanced driver assist technology, all Jeep Wranglers are built with a high-strength steel frame that provides rigidity and solidity for optimal crash protection, as well as strategically-located airbags that protect occupants when a crash happens. The best part of Jeep’s commitment to safety is the combination of systems that work together to help avoid crashes and protect occupants if a crash happens.
