The Many Generations of the Grand Cherokee
Innovation was the theme for Jeep in the 1990s as the automaker sought to fill a need in its lineup with an SUV that could seamlessly blend luxury with capability. The Grand Cherokee was Jeep’s answer to fill this need and, surprisingly, was slated to replace the Cherokee. However, Cherokee sales continued to soar and left the automaker no other choice but to keep the Cherokee and its grander sibling in the lineup.
The first-generation Grand Cherokee set a new standard in the midsize luxury segment of SUVs with its jaw-dropping debut in 1992. Sure, the SUV crashed through the convention center, but the real showstopper is what’s inside. As the first SUV equipped with a driver-side airbag, the Grand Cherokee offered rear-wheel drive and the choice between a part-time Command-Trac or full-time Select-Trac four-wheel drive system. Its 190 horsepower 4.0-liter engine also delivered plenty of power but was eventually overshadowed by the 220 horsepower V8 engine, which delivered 245 horsepower by the late 1990s.
The first generation also saw the addition of four disc brakes and a new Quadra-Trac full-time 4WD system that boosted the SUV’s capability and earned the Grand Cherokee numerous awards, including MotorTrend Truck of the Year. By the end of the generation, over one million Grand Cherokees were sold as Jeep smoothed the SUV’s ride and increased its capability to give drivers more of what they wanted.
The Grand Cherokee’s second generation is marked by more power and off-road prowess with significant improvements to the powertrain and four-wheel drive systems.
