The Compass first debuted as a 2007 model and was designed to tackle the city and rural roads alike. While it was certainly more commuter-friendly than its Wrangler counterpart, its all-wheel drive capability and optional diesel engine availability took it far above its competition, making it powerful despite its small size. The Compass’s first generation lasted from 2007 to 2011, slowly but surely climbing the ranks over its next generations. It reached best-in-class 4x4 off-roading capability by 2017, just a decade from its initial release, as Jeep continued to make improvements with each new generation.
Keep in mind that all Compass models are technically capable of heading off-road, but if you’re looking for the best off-roading features, it comes as no surprise that you’ll want to look for the legendary Trailhawk trim. The fifth-generation Compass Trailhawk is Trail Rated, making it an off-road-capable model with features such as Hill Descent Control, the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System, and the Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System. No matter which model year you choose, though, the Compass is great when you want some of the Wrangler’s capability with a more realistic everyday commuter experience.
The fifth-generation 2022 Jeep Compass is completely redesigned, not only making it more visually appealing but, most importantly, easier to navigate with. The 2022 Compass Trailhawk trim has the Jeep Trail Rated badge, meaning that it scores above the benchmark for the following categories: traction, water fording, maneuverability, articulation, and ground clearance. You can crawl over rocks, logs, and other debris while pushing through up to 19 inches of water. Uneven and slippery terrain is also manageable, thanks to traction, maneuverability, and articulation.
Typically, it can feel like you have to choose between power and fuel efficiency, but that changes with the new Compass. The 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4 engine provides the Compass with a perfect balance of capability and fuel efficiency, pumping out 177 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. Drivers can get around 31 MPG on the highway and a max 2,000-pound towing capacity. Jeep Active Drive gives the Compass Trailhawk a 20:1 crawl ratio, along with low-range driving. Hill Descent Control acts as an off-roading cruise control for declines, holding the Jeep back and letting the driver focus solely on steering.
The 2022 Compass comes in seven other trim levels for those who don’t need the Trailhawk’s higher-level off-roading capability. No matter which trim level you choose, though, you’ll have access to standard safety and security features like Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking and Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection, along with optional safety and technology add-ons such as Active Lane Management and Adaptive Cruise Control.
