A Little About the Wrangler’s History
Most people know that the Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to the American military in 1941. What’s lesser-known is that the “Wrangler” name didn’t become official until 1987, when the Jeep Wrangler YJ first came out. Since its official debut, the Wrangler’s off-roading capability has improved greatly with each generation.
Back before the Wrangler JK (2007 to 2018), 4-cylinder engines were standard on Jeep Wrangler models. The JK generation introduces the more powerful V6 engine, while the JL generation (2018 to present) kicks it up to a standard 4.0-liter turbocharged engine with optional V6 and 3.0-liter turbodiesel options. This leads to more power and, most importantly, more torque, which is important when hitting the trails.
That said, off-roading is still definitely possible with older Wranglers, especially since the off-road-specific Rubicon trim debuted in 2003, offering a more durable body and other trail-ready features. But the newer generation Wranglers are the most trail-ready models you can buy. That said, if you’re a DIY type of driver, older, used models are fun to fix up, as the Wrangler had interchangeable parts for many decades.
It’s also important to keep in mind that it’s not all about off-roading. Like we said earlier, Wranglers are used for more than just trailing. In fact, right-hand-drive Jeeps are actually legal in the United States, thanks to the postal service. The CJ-generation Dispatcher Jeep was designed specifically for mail carriers, and while it ceased production in the 1980s, Jeep has continued offering “special order” right-hand drive Wranglers. There are many reasons to buy a Wrangler, both old and new. Off-road capability is simply the top reason.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler
Each Jeep Wrangler generation offers more capability, and the same is true for each new model year. The 2022 model adds more off-roading power than ever before, especially with the new Rubicon 392 trim level. The 392 comes with a V8 HEMI engine, pumping out 470 torque and horsepower ratings. This model also has steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, dual-mode exhaust, and bead-lock-capable wheels.
You don’t have to go with the 392 just to reach high-end features. While the 392 trim is the off-roading master, all 2022 Wranglers are off-road capable. In fact, even the new hybrid 4xe trim offers plenty of power, matching the 392’s 470 horsepower rating, plus up to 375 pound-feet of torque. On a full charge, this model can go 49 miles on electric-only driving.
