History of Ram Trucks

Although the Ram truck has only been around just over 40 years, it is part of a Dodge truck legacy that goes back much further. The Dodge brand has been a popular auto division since 1928, originally as a part of Chrysler and now as part of Stellantis. While the “Dodge” name is primarily associated with performance cars these days, in decades past, it was also known for delivering some of the hardest-working and most-impressive trucks on the road. These included the Dodge Job-Rated trucks of the 1940s, the B-Series trucks throughout the late 1940s and early 1950s, the C-Series trucks of the 1950s, and the D-Series of the 1960s and ‘70s.

Dodge finally abandoned this naming convention when they released the first-generation Dodge Ram truck for the 1981 model year. A ram’s head hood ornament had been used on some Dodge trucks all the way back in the 1930s, but the new truck series in the 1980s marked the first use of the “Ram” name. This name was used on the generations of fantastic Ram trucks that followed:

• The first generation from 1981 to 1993
• The second generation from 1994 to 2001
• The third generation from 2002 to 2008
• The fourth generation from 2009 to 2018
• The fifth generation kicked off with the 2019 model year

One important thing to note when looking at used Ram trucks is not only the year in terms of generation but also how the name changed. The name “Dodge Ram” was used from when it first launched in 1981 through the very beginning of the fourth generation in 2009. Starting with the 2010 model year, however, they dropped the “Dodge” part of the name and now simply call it the Ram truck. This gives the Ram brand more of its own identity; while most people will know what you mean if you mention the “Dodge Ram,” for the sake of accuracy, it is important to keep this in mind when looking at used models.

Dodge Ram Trucks

While used Dodge Ram trucks can go all the way back into the 1980s, most models that you find at your favorite dealership are going to be from the most recent generations. Since these models include those up to the 2009 model year, your best bet will be focusing on the third generation and the start of the fourth generation for the Dodge Ram. If you are looking for a light-duty Ram 1500, then you can go as far back as the 2002 model year, while the heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models launched their comparable models for 2003.

The third generation of the Dodge Ram included significant updates and changes, including an all-new frame and suspension along with new powertrain options that really set it apart from the models that came before it. This generation was very popular, and that means there are still a lot of them out there on the used market where they represent an incredible value if they were well-cared-for by a previous owner. Options for this generation included regular and Quad cabs; a facelift in 2006 added a four-door Mega cab along with some performance updates.

If you want some of the latest features, then look for a 2009 Dodge Ram, which marked the first year for the fourth generation of this truck. This is also the last year you will find the name “Dodge” used on these pickups, and they included a number of impressive upgrades. 2009 models have refined interiors with more four-door cabs, improved HEMI engines that were offered on them, and an improved suspension. If you really want the “Dodge” name, then this is a great model to look for when shopping used.

Modern Ram Trucks

For the best overall combination of features and options, we suggest looking for a Ram truck from 2010 or later, which represents some of the best models on the road. Of particular note, an update for 2013 included some styling changes and updated engine and transmission options like a more-powerful base engine and additional options for powertrains. If you want a used Ram truck to take off-road, then look for a model from 2016 or later when the trail-focused Rebel trim was introduced with an off-road suspension and higher ride height. One important thing to note is that this generation was so popular that Ram continued producing it, even after the next generation was introduced, as the Ram 1500 Classic for 2019 and beyond.

Speaking of the 2019 model year, if you want the latest features and the most refined interior of any truck on the road, then look for a used Ram 1500 from 2019 or later for the incredible updates that are a part of the fifth generation. With this new generation, a mild hybrid system became available on certain engines, called eTorque, which boosts torque output and overall performance – it has even been offered on the HEMI engine. Combine that with interior options like a 12-inch infotainment display and the most luxurious interior of any truck on the road, and you have an amazing used pickup that has likely just come off a lease and is in fantastic shape.
