The Jeep Wrangler is one of the most popular, versatile, and trustworthy vehicles on the market. Smaller in size than a truck and possessing the ability to handle both urban and off-road situations, it’s long been a favorite of adventurers and the average consumer for several years. At Zimmer Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we understand this affection for the Wrangler, which is why you’ll find a wide selection of them on our lot. And finding a used Wrangler in impeccable shape is one of the many advantages you can benefit from when you decide to make us your used Jeep Wrangler dealer. Unlike many used vehicles, Jeep Wranglers are known for maintaining their resale value, even after considerable amounts of time. This speaks to the high standard of quality that Jeep has maintained throughout the decades, and this is the quality that we believe in adhering to when it comes to both our inventory and our customers.

A History of Pride and Tradition

While the Jeep Wrangler started making appearances at dealerships in 1986, the lineage and history of the Wrangler extend much farther back. It wasn’t the needs of the average consumer or even the off-road enthusiast that would create the necessity for the Wrangler’s predecessor, but the escalation of war half a world away from the automobile factories of America. With the outbreak of the second world war in Europe, the United States at first declined military intervention but decided to supply the allied nations with the necessary implements and supplies through what was known as the “lend lease” act.

Of these implements was the Jeep. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, The United States officially entered the conflict on the side of Britain and the Soviet Union. The Jeep’s time in the conflict was notable, and upwards of 650,000 would serve in the line of duty in both the European and Pacific theaters of operation. Their service would continue when the United Nations chose to aid South Korea in the early 1950s. Thanks to their prominent and frequent use in the popular television show, M*A*S*H*, their popularity was secured.

Generation of Greatness: The Wrangler Through the Years

The Jeep Wrangler, the modern-day descendant of this revered combat veteran, has lasted through four generations since its debut in 1986 as a 1987 model. The first generation, also known as the “YJ” made an impact with both domestic consumers and the overseas markets. One of the hallmarks of the Wrangler, and something that makes it the favorite of many drivers, is its unique modular design. Even the original Wrangler had an easily removable top and removable doors so drivers could feel connected to the environment in their go-anywhere vehicle. This is also the only generation of the Wrangler to feature the square headlights.

Two engines were available for the first-generation Wrangler, a 2.5L 4-cylinder and a 4.2L In-line six-cylinder. The standard transmission for the Wrangler was a five-speed manual transmission, which helped accentuate the sporty nature of the vehicle. With five manual gears, you could handle going over whatever obstacle took over your path. However, a three-speed automatic was available for those who preferred it.

The first generation of the Jeep Wrangler lasted for a period of nine years, ceasing production in 1996. The second generation made its debut in 1996 for the 1997 model year. Referred to as the “TJ,” some aesthetic changes were issued, such as round headlights, which were a throwback to the Jeeps of yesteryear. Much like the previous generation, the model was still designed with a removable roof and doors for the full Wrangler experience. However, this model also featured a fold-down windshield to bring your connection with nature to the next level and the option of a hard or soft-top.

Mechanical changes were issued as well, such as a new Quadra-Coil suspension which replaced the leaf spring design of the previous incarnation and increased the ground clearance and articulation of the model. The main engine utilized by the Jeep Wrangler at this time was the AMC 4.0L straight-six engine. One of the hallmarks of the company’s ingenuity, the engine would be in use for an astounding length of two decades. Used in a variety of vehicles, it offered the Jeep Wrangler 190 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, both of which were accomplished with less than 5000 RPM.

While the second generation of the Jeep Wrangler would span an entire decade, nothing lasts forever, and the 2007 model year would witness the arrival of the third generation of the Jeep Wrangler, known as the “JK.” This generation would bring about significant changes, such as a redesigned frame and suspension, and there was more. While the new Wrangler still came available in the classic two-door body style, a new appealing option presented itself in the form of the Wrangler Unlimited, a larger four-door model. As one of the biggest changes to the Wrangler since its introduction over two decades prior, this was a gamble that paid off for the manufacturer. Within a span of less than ten years, the new four-door Wranglers now accounted for 75% of the market. Customers also had the option between a 2.8L diesel-powered engine or a 3.8L gasoline-powered V-6.

The present generation of the Jeep Wrangler is quite possibly the most versatile in its options and provides consumers with larger variations than we ever thought possible. Known as the “JL” generation and making its debut in 2018, it still offered the choices that the previous generation did but with exciting new options for powertrains. One of the first exciting announcements was something many people had been asking to have for a long time–a more powerful engine. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 completely blows past Wrangler engines out of the water with 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque.

But that wasn’t all the new generation of the Wrangler had to surprise people with. The introduction of the Wrangler 4xe, an ecologically friendly plug-in hybrid, changed the popular conception of what Jeep was capable of accomplishing. More efficient than other Jeep Wranglers and highly performant with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, this model shows that Jeep was happy to make a greener change, and they did so without sacrificing the performance and style Wrangler fans demand. Whatever Jeep has in store for the future, it’s certain that its legacy will continue to be one of a kind.
