Aging in Style

It was over 50 years ago that the first Challenger made an appearance. 1970 was the start of the Dodge Challenger legacy. Built off the Chrysler E-body platform, the Challenger was available as a convertible or a hardtop coupe. Consumers had the choice between an I-6 or a series of V8 engines, including a HEMI that produced an impressive 425-horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. An optional “shaker” hood scoop, vinyl roof, and body accents were just some of the options to customize the Challenger.

Over the following years, the Challenger would see some cosmetic changes, but nothing too drastic. The changes were kept primarily to the front end, with the grille and headlights seeing some redesigns, as well as the rear lights. Dodge also cut back on some of the available options and engine choices, but mostly it remained the same. Unfortunately, the Challenger wasn’t met with as much adoration as it is now, so production on the muscle car halted in 1974.

1978 the Challenger was granted a rebirth in the form of the Dodge Colt Challenger. Far from its original muscle car styling, the Colt was a two-door coupe that lacked the appeal that it once had. Eventually, in 1983, the Challenger would be buried once again, taking its ’80s flair with it.
Miraculously, this wasn’t the end for the Challenger. In 2008 the Challenger was brought to life once again, and this time it honored its muscle car roots. This time around, an adjusted LX platform is used, and a HEMI V8 is dropped in, producing a whopping 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. In the following years, a few more engine options are added, including the Pentastar V6 in 2012.

As the Challenger continued to grow in popularity, more trim options were added. The base trim would continue as the SXT, while the R/T, R/T Shaker, and R/T Scat Pack would be added, as well as a refresh of the SRT8, which would continue under the new trim name SRT 392. More impressive, however, was the addition of the Challenger SRT Hellcat. Loaded with an impressive V8 supercharged HEMI, the Hellcat burst onto the scene producing an incredible 707 horsepower.

With such momentum, there was no stopping the Challenger and the places it would go. In 2018, it would go deeper down the performance rabbit hole with the all-new Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. If 707 horsepower seemed exciting, the 840 horsepower pumped out by the Demon would be a straight-up thrill ride. A widebody option was also added to help combat the intense power being created by the Demon. The Demon was only produced for a year, but it made a huge impact on the muscle car industry.

With no intention of throwing in the hellish towel, Dodge rolled out the 2019 Challenger Hellcat Redeye. The V8 dropped the horsepower a bit, but it still managed to race down the track with ease. The widebody option is continued, and a new dual scoop hood is added. Additionally, the Challenger R/T Scat Pack 1320 would also grace the drag strip but with the intention of being suitable for everyday driving as well.

Entering 2021, many of the familiar trims were still being offered, including the GT, which was introduced earlier on, as well as the Hellcat, R/T trims, and SXT. Updated safety features, performance components, and driver assistance tech have all been equipped, and it will remain this way through the next couple of years. It seems that Dodge understood long ago that once you find something that works, you stick with it.
