A Short History of the Wagoneer
You can’t drive from your home to the nearby grocery store without spotting any number of luxury SUVs; they are quite literally everywhere. But that wasn’t the case in the early 1980s when the original Grand Wagoneer debuted. Arguably the first luxury SUV, the Grand Wagoneer was based on the simple Wagoneer, which entered production in 1963 and was far from luxurious.
When AMC took over Kaiser-Jeep in 1970, it immediately began refining the Wagoneer. Throughout the 1970s, several features, including power features, leather seats, and woodgrain stickers (which were later upgraded to real wood), gave the Wagoneer a more upscale look and feel. In 1984, the Wagoneer Limited changed names to the Grand Wagoneer, which offered several modern features in a more comfortable model.
